The Ultimate, Mom-Tested Packing List
There’s something oddly satisfying about packing your hospital bag—it’s the final “we’re really doing this” moment before baby arrives. Whether you’re a minimalist or a “pack it all, just in case” kind of mama, the key is feeling prepared and comfortable.
A few of us moms came together and compiled a list of must-haves that got us through those first hours (and days) in the hospital. These are real-life, postpartum-approved essentials—not the Pinterest-perfect ones that never leave the bag. And yes, we highly recommend wheeling in a small suitcase (bonus points if your partner carries it!).
Hospital Bag Essentials – Mom-Approved
Long Charging Cable (6–10ft) USB C or Lightning
Those plugs are never where you need them. Bring a long cord so you’re not dangling off the bed while texting updates.
Snacks (for you and the nurses)
Labour and recovery make you hungry. Think granola bars, crackers, and something sweet. Pro tip: pack a few extras for the amazing nurses—it’s an appreciated gesture. And pack some sour candies! This helps reset your brain during labour
Comfy Outfit for After Delivery
Think soft, breathable, nursing-friendly. You’ll want something that doesn’t press on your belly and makes you feel like you again.
Your Own Pillow & Blanket
Hospital linens are… functional. Bringing your own (especially a cozy throw or pregnancy pillow) makes a huge difference in comfort.
Crocs, Slippers, or Shower Sandals
Slip-on shoes are your best friend. Easy to get on and off, and perfect for walking the halls or navigating those first showers.
Lip Balm
Hospitals are dry and you’ll be doing a lot of breathing (and maybe panting). Trust us—lip balm is a tiny saviour.
Cute Newborn Outfit
Your first family photo deserves a sweet little outfit. Keep it soft and easy to put on—no need for fussy buttons or layers.
Birthing Playlist + Speaker
Music can help ground you, motivate you, or drown out that hospital beep. Bonus if it’s waterproof or compact!
Breath Mints or Gum
Great for you and your partner—especially if labour’s long and snacks are frequent.
Nursing Pillow
Whether you plan to breastfeed or not, these are amazing for supporting your arms and baby during cuddle time.
Stretchy Robe, Pants, or Nightdress
Something easy to get on/off and soft around your midsection—especially helpful if you’ve had a C-section.
Adult Diapers (yes, really) M or L
Way more comfortable and secure than bulky hospital pads. Trust the moms on this one.
Dr. Jack’s Nipple Balm or Earth Mama Organic Nipple Butter
A cult favourite for a reason—gentle, effective, and lanolin-free.
Frida Mom Postpartum Kit
Padsicles, cooling liners, perineal bottles—this kit is a game changer if your hospital doesn’t provide much.
Reusable Water Bottle (XL with Straw)
Labour is thirsty work, and hydration is key postpartum. That trendy Starbucks cup? Bring it.
Hair Ties or Clips
Get it out of your face. Some mamas even recommend French braiding before labour begins—less fuss later. Try Marley Sew Co – cute scrunchies that keep even the softest hair in a ponytail
Basic Toiletries
Toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, face wipes, hairbrush, and moisturizer. Small things that help you feel human.
iPad / Book / Netflix Downloads
For downtime, inductions, or overnight stays. Keeps you occupied without draining your phone.
Cute Outfit for Baby’s First Photos
You’ll blink and suddenly you’re snapping their very first pictures. Pack a cozy but camera-ready outfit (think soft neutrals or a sweet print). It’s one of those little things that makes the moment extra special—and Instagram ready.
Nursing Bra or Knixs Nursing Bra
Trust me, you’ll thank yourself for packing one. Comfort and easy access make those first feeds smoother, and you don’t want to be wrestling with straps while learning the ropes of nursing.
There’s something extra special about snapping those very first photos and having them instantly printed. It’s a sweet, keepsake-worthy way to capture the raw, real “firsts” without waiting for the cloud to sync.
A Note from the Mamas of Chapter One
Packing your hospital bag is more than just preparing—it’s nesting, it’s daydreaming, and it’s one more way to care for yourself before you bring someone new into the world. Every mama’s journey is different, but being prepared (and comfy) helps every single one.
